Oaxaca is the capital of the state of Oaxaca and with its cultural and historic wealth an ideal place to experience the beauty of Mexico and its inhabitants. Because of its magnificent colonial architecture UNESCO declared Oaxaca to the center of World Culture. The Spanish founded the city in 1529 close to a fort, which was built by the Aztecs around 1486. The city was planned by the famous Alonso Garcia, who also planned Mexico City and Veracruz. The town square of Oaxaca, the Zolaco, was built so that there is a church on one side and a government building on the other. This was supposed to symbolize the harmony between church and state. The Zolaco is one of the most famous and beautiful town squares in Mexico and the cultural center of Oaxaca. Here people sit and argue; from here you can observe the Palacio de Gobierno. The typical herb and corn dealers come together here with many artists. There are lots of restaurants and small colorful stores where you can buy a snack or clothes situated around the Zolaco.

The markets in Oaxaca are one of the many very special experiences offered here. Here you can get Oaxacan cheese, fruit and vegetables, as well as many different craft items like baskets, jewelry and clothes. The most famous market takes place on November 20th and is a whirlwind of colors and smells. However, the best way to get to know the city is to visit one of the many traditional festivals. The most famous of these is the La Guelaguetz, which takes place on the last two Mondays in July. Many folklore groups come together and present their best costumes, music and dance. As you can see Oaxaca has culturally a lot to offer. The wildlife in Oaxaca is also breathtaking. The state of Oaxaca has one of the most complex ecosystems around with over 30,000 different types of plants. Oaxaca is also a great starting point for many different excursions to archaeological sites in the area. One has to have personally experienced these sites to really appreciate their real meaning and beauty.
