During the summer the nights are white in St. Petersburg. The glistening polar sunlight shines almost continuously. St. Petersburg, which was built upon swampland in 1703, has often been called the “Northern Venice”. The four million inhabitants of St. Petersburg live on 42 “islands” that are connected by countless channels. The city lies directly on the Finnish gulf and has a comfortable summer (19-22°C) and a mild (for Russian standards) winter (–4- -8°C). St. Petersburg was the capitol of the Russian realm from the 18th to 20th century. Many revolutions, including the October Revolution (1917) took place here. St. Petersburg is connected architecturally and culturally with western progress. The city is enchanting. The fortified banks of the Newa are lined with impressive old buildings like the winter palace and the Peter and Paul fortress. The entire downtown area was declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. Countless splendorous buildings with a combination of western styles form the cityscape.

St. Petersburg is the cradle of Russian ballet, chess and literature. Authors like Puschkin, Gogol and Dostojewski were born here. Subways, a suburban railway, buses and trolleys all belong to the well-developed transportation network in St. Petersburg. The subway stations are the deepest in the world – they are 90 meters below the street. Post-Communism restorations are still taking place and can be seen all over the city. On the main street, the Newski Prospect, you can see luxury stores next to famous fast-food stores. The scares of the Russian history can be seen all over St. Petersburg. St. Petersburg is said to be laughing, singing, and dancing as well as reflecting about the past. St. Petersburg is the perfect place to learn Russian and experience the past and current Russian culture.
