Florence is divided into two parts by the river Arno, and is surrounded by hills. Art treasures and other symbols of history and culture mould the city. Sixty per cent of the world’s art is found in Italy – half of this is found in Florence. The Italian Renaissance, one of the most flourishing eras in Europe, began in Florence with the completion of the Dome by Brunelleschi. During this time, many palaces and town squares were built which has turned the city into a living museum. The churches, galleries, and museums let the visitors feel the spirit of the Renaissance in Florence more than anywhere else in Italy. The city had its heyday from the 13th to 16th century. Many famous artists and poets lived in Florence, such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Titian, Rubens, Dante, and Boccaccio. The powerful family Medici ruled Florence not only politically but also culturally and economically from 1434 until 1743. The Medici had a great influence on architecture and art. They built many palaces and appointed many famous artists to design and decorate them.
