The GMAT is not only a language exam. The Graduate Management Admission Test, as described by the GMAT itself, can be used at american universities of management which usually ask for the GMAT in order to certify that you can think logically, and for the TOEFL as to certify you language knowledge. You should not take the GMAT without preparation, since it is really difficult and the individual results are archieved centrally. You can take the GMAT at the ETS testcenters which are located in almost every big city world-wide. The results go from 0 to 800 points, however you will also get additional information like your position regarding the others: for example, you can be 60% better than the others who have take the exam as well. If you get a more difficult or easier question, depends on the fact, if you have answered the previous question properly or not, however you should be able to answer the difficult questions, if you want to have good results.
The GMAT contains serveral difficult sections: the quantitative section corresponds to mathematical and geometrical questions. You should be able to solve rules of proportion, rules of three and arithmetic problems. If you want to prepare yourself for the GMAT you should practice such basic equations and be aware of how long do you need for each of them. The second section of the GMAT is a language comprehension test which may be even difficult for advanced speakers: 41 multiple choice questions divided into several sections: reading comprehension, critical reasoning and sentence correction. But you will also have to write two texts for the section "writing". One member of the Linguland team, who took this exam and got good results recommends to prepare this exam according to several steps: buy a good adaptation of a preparatory ETS book with about 1000 questions and some Kaplan tests which are supposed to be quite difficult. With this two products you can practice the quantitative section of the GMAT.If you have not enough mathematical knowledge from school, it would also be recommendable to buy a mathematics book in order to practice equations. For the linguistic section we would not necessarily recommend a preparatory course, even though some of ours schools do offer it. We think that your preparation would be more sucessful, if you took an intensive English course in a school that focuses on the academic aims of its students.
